Losing your only car key is no joke, and it pays to have a spare cut and kept somewhere safe. At Lásaþjónustan we program new car keys for most makes at our workshop, and we also take emergency call-outs at short notice and program spare keys on site when no copy exists and programming is possible at all.
Say an owner loses their only key and the car is stuck in a car park. During opening hours we can take the call-out at short notice and often program a new key on the spot. Some information, however, has to come from the car dealerships, and they do not answer the phone in the evenings. That is why it is often better to wait until Monday if the only car key is lost over a weekend.
We program most types of car keys at the workshop while you wait, where programming is possible. The owner simply brings the car and hands over the original key; copying takes only a few minutes. If the car instead has to be towed to a garage where a new key is programmed and the engine computer replaced or reset, the service can cost considerably more. In many cases we can reset the computer and program a key anew.
If the owner contacts neither a locksmith nor a garage, they can order a new key from the dealership, but the price rises further still and it is not unusual to pay twice as much for a new remote key there. The difference in price can therefore be enormous depending on the route chosen, and there are real savings in having a spare key programmed in good time. On most work we are 20–50% cheaper than the car dealerships.
House keys and cylinders
Security is the first thing to consider when buying property, so we recommend replacing the cylinder and keys at the first opportunity once the property is handed over. It is also worth reviewing older locks regularly so that your security matches what insurers expect against damage and intruders.
A locksmith can both replace the cylinder on site and cut new keys at our workshop if you have lost your house keys, if the lock is faulty or if the household is locked out. We answer emergency call-outs and open locks on site, and we also cut keys at the workshop while you wait. Other common reasons for new keys and cylinders are moving house, staff changes and upgrading standard security hardware.
